Together Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who appreciate the horror genre: Sit down with your significant other and watch Together. The independent film success of 2025 has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it might appear like standard physical horror, but within Together resides a profound meditation about how we choose to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Investigating Partnership Complexities

Together marks the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, partners that have been together for ten years. Married in reality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the joys and frustrations of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the pair. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a methodically building fright fest, blending moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Shanks weaves these elements together neatly and wraps them up in a slowly mounting atmosphere of fear.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is solely Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Her self-assurance and emotional bond is suffering due to a lack of intimacy. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his struggling artistic pursuits inexorably rises.

Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the notion of completely losing his individual identity in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he lacks a driver's license and needs Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters confront the type of challenges that come with long-term unions over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism avoids being clumsy or heavy-handed. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes offer a perfect parallel to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has left audiences divided on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a powerful case for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them resolve their issues.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own reaction could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the finale sow a sense of discomfort and fear, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can experience at this very moment.

Together is available to watch on the streaming service Hulu at present.
