British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.
The site, located using intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.
"Our aircraft used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of access tunnels leading to the facility... initial indications indicate the strike was effective," officials stated.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
Daesh - also known as ISIS - enforced militant control over large swathes of Iraq and Syria until 2019.
"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to stamp out any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.
UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS following its defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces involved in this operation for their skill and their courage," he added. "Including them were numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and influential overseas."
During December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "large-scale strike" against Islamic State objectives in the country, after an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports Islamic State still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 combatants in Iraq and Syria.
