Colombian President Declares 'I Will Return to Arms Once More' if American Forces Invades.

President Trump along with his Colombian counterpart have escalated the volume of their war of words, further raising tensions between the two countries after US forces struck Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He operates narcotics facilities and production sites and his time is running out," Trump added.

Growing Rhetoric and Claims

Speaking to journalists on Sunday, the American leader suggested comparable military action against Bogotá, claiming the country faces serious problems and “run by a sick man who likes making the drug and trafficking it to America."

Although Colombia is the leading source of the narcotic, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is personally tied to the business.

A Strained Alliance

Colombia was historically a close partner of Washington in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing in Washington, yet ties have deteriorated markedly since Trump assumed the presidency.

Colombia’s narcotics trade is mainly overseen by criminal organizations such as the Golf Clan, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc), the majority of whose members demobilised after a historic peace agreement.

Petro's Firm Response

When asked if armed intervention comparable to Venezuela was a possibility against his country, Trump responded: "That seems like a good idea from my perspective."

President Petro, once a member of a left-wing insurgent group who disarmed in the 1990s, categorically refuted the accusations. "I am not illegitimate and I am not a narco," he stated.

"He comments without knowledge. End the false accusations," he expressed online.

"If US bombs target peasants, they will transform into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain the president, which a significant portion of the population loves and respects, they will provoke the powerful force of the nation," Petro warned.

From Insurgent to Statesman

He passed some years as a young man as a member in the left-wing M-19 armed organization although reports indicate to have ever participated in combat. After demobilizing, he took part in creating the constitutional rewrite over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He was mayor of the capital city before being elected president.

"I swore to never again hold a weapon again ... but in defense of my country I would take up the fight," he affirmed.

Reinforced Protection and Widespread Condemnation

The Colombian defence minister stated that Petro's personal security was strengthened.

Many among Colombia’s conservative opposition have expressed support with Trump, however, leaders from all sides of the ideological divide have denounced the possibility of an invasion on Colombia.

Bilateral and Economic Strains

The US withdrew his travel authorization after he called on US troops to refuse unlawful commands. Later, in October, the US enacted economic restrictions on Petro, his wife and several key allies.

At the same time as the US increased its troop levels near Venezuela and targeting suspected drug boats to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, US forces also carried out operations against vessels in the eastern Pacific region adjacent to Colombia.
