A tragic railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's major government projects.
The accident occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader announced that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in grave condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's developmental goals for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both train projects was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its role in public infrastructure. They were built at an rapid rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had simultaneously raised significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train hit a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the chief of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the situation "calls for immediate answers."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
